What is Solid-State EV Battery Technology?

The current technology in electric driving relies primarily on lithium-ion batteries. While these batteries have helped reduce environmental impacts and contribute to cleaner driving, they have and impose certain limitations in terms of size, weight, and capacity. Solid-state EV batteries utilize solid electrolytes, rather than liquid, which helps make the battery safer and reduces its weight. They will also allow for a higher gravimetric energy density, which is the amount of energy stored per unit mass of the battery. Gravimetric energy density is a crucial factor to consider when evaluating battery efficiency and performance, particularly in electric vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz and Solid-State EV Battery Technology

Solid-state EV batteries have the potential to revolutionize the future of electric driving, and Mercedes-Benz is at the forefront of the charge. Currently, AMG® engineers, in collaboration with Factorial® cell engineers, are testing the first lithium-metal solid-state battery on the road, with road tests commencing in February of this year. The Mercedes-Benz EQS sedan, tested with a solid-state battery, had 25% more electric range than previous models, and test models are expected to have a range of over 621 miles on a single charge. Testing and development are expected to continue for several months.
