Mercedes-Benz EV models have been redefining high-tech, eco-friendly luxury vehicles, and Mercedes-Benz isn’t about to stop. In fact, they’re taking even more steps to reduce environmental impacts and help to make every ride safer and more friendly for the earth we share. Learn how Mercedes-Benz is closing the battery loop and explore luxury electric vehicles at Mercedes-Benz of Annapolis.

What is the Battery Loop?

Rather than an internal combustion engine, electric vehicles rely on a battery and electric motor to run. That means lower emissions and a reduced reliance on fossil fuels. However, batteries have proven complex and environmentally costly to recycle, posing unique challenges for the automotive industry for some time. Mercedes-Benz is now working to develop the answer to that question using innovative battery recycling technology.

How Does Mercedes-Benz Battery Recycling Work?

In order to fix the battery gap in eco-friendly automotive design, Mercedes-Benz has now opened Europe’s first battery recycling plant. They are the world’s first automotive manufacturer to take such a step. The plant is located in southern Germany and is dedicated to creating a closed-loop system.

Up to 96% of the material resources, including lithium, cobalt, and nickel, are expected to be recovered. That means significantly reducing mining and harvesting needs and single-use material consumption. The recovered materials will find use as reconditioned batteries, spare parts, or resources for the energy storage system.
